In Windows 10, when Start menu is crashed, and you'll get one of the following errors "Critical Error – Start menu and Cortana aren’t working. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in.” or “Critical Error – Your Start menu isn’t working. We’ll try to fix it the next time you sign in”.
Here are some solution, you can apply to fix this problem in Windows 10.
Solution #1. Create new User Account
Go to taskmanager by pressing Alt + Ctrl + Delete and click file to run new task. Now tick on "create this task with administrative privileges" and type cmd. In CMD type the following command and hit enter each time.
net user baatkar digitaladda /ADD
net localgroup administrators baatkar /add
You'll get the following message, "The command completed successfully". Here "baatkar" is username and "digitaladda" is your password for new account. Again press Alt + Ctrl + Delete and click on switch user. Now sign with your new username and password.
Solution #2. Re-register Start menu
Go to taskmanager by pressing Alt + Ctrl + Delete and click on File > Create new task > type CMD and enter powershell in command line. Now paste the following line in Powershell Window and hit enter.
Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
Solution #3. Safe Mode
Hold the Shift key down while you click Start, Power, Restart. Once you are in the Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, then Startup Settings, and Restart. When it restarts, you should see a number of options. Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with networking. Once you sign into your account in Safe Mode, you’re done. Just restart your PC to return to a normal boot.
Solution #4. Reinstall Antivirus
If you are running a third-party antivirus software, we recommend uninstalling, then reinstalling the antivirus software, as this may also provide a work-around for this problem.
Solution #5. Runtime Broker
Go to taskmanager and kill process "Runtime Broker" and Start menu will start working right away.
Solution #6. Reinstall Dropbox
You need to uninstall Dropbox from Control panel and restart your PC. After reboot, you can install dropbox.
Solution #7. Reinstall Windows Apps
Go to taskmanager by pressing Alt + Ctrl + Delete and click on File > Create new task > type CMD and enter powershell in command line. Now paste the following line in Powershell WindowGet-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
Wait for the powershell to execute the command and ignore a few red error codes, restart Windows.
Solution #8. Registry Editor
Go to search, type regedit and open Registry Editor, go to the following path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ ImmersiveShell\Launcher
Click edit, new, DWORD (32 bit) value, and name it UseExperience. Double click the newly created item and set the value to 0, click OK, close the Registry Editor and then restart your computer.
Solution #9. Repair Corrupt Windows Files
Go to Task manager, click on file and run new task and type powershell (also tick on the box 'create this task with administrative privileges'), click OK. In Powershell Window, type sfc/scannow and press return key. After scanning is completed, if you find "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them indicates a problem".
In this case, type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth into the PowerShell window and press the Return key. This will download files from Windows Update to replace the corrupt ones and, again, this may take some time.
Solution #10. Reset Your PC
Log out of your Windows account by pressing the Win + L key, on the login screen, click the Power icon at the bottom right and hold the Shift key to select the Restart option. After restart choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files.
